Frankie Dettori has always ranked among the highest-earning jockeys in the world. However, his financial struggles in recent memory have seen the Italian making the headlines. Dettori filled for bankruptcy in 2025 after a long-running case with HMRC over a solution to a tax dispute.
At his height, Dettori reportedly had a net worth of between £15 and £18 million, and he won over £153 million in prize money in 2022 alone. According to Equibase, Dettori has won over $60 million in prize money during his career in the United States.
His success on track has continued throughout the 2025 season, winning $7.7 million in prize money. Dettori has ridden 38 winners from his 313 rides, also finishing in the money on 64 occasions.
Notable Victories in 2025
Since moving to the United States in 2024, Dettori has needed to battle to gain rides in some of the biggest races on the calendar. His battle to make a name for himself Stateside has continued throughout 2025, and he has achieved notable successes on track.
His biggest win in North America this calendar year came aboard Raging Torrent, who was the winner of the G1 Metropolitan Handicap earlier in 2025. However, unsurprisingly, his biggest moments in the U.S. have been achieved in turf races.
That includes a success in the G3 Nashville Derby aboard Wimbledon Hawkeye. Meanwhile, he was also teamed up with Charlie Appleby-trained Rebel’s Romance to land the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic.
Legendary Reputation
Dettori’s reputation as one of the leading riders in the world has been achieved over a long duration of time. The Italian has been a professional jockey for over 35 years, and he has ridden a staggering 287 Group One winners. His reputation in the biggest races on the calendar have seen him score victories in 23 British Classics, which includes two winners in the Epsom Derby.
Many of Dettori’s notable moments would come during his stint as the stable jockey for the John Gosden yard between 1993 and 2012. During this period, the Italian would achieve the remarkable feat of winning all seven races during the British Festival of Racing at Ascot Racecourse in 1996, costing the betting industry a reported £40 million.
However, Dettori’s stint with Gosden ended in controversial fashion, as he was dumped by Godolphin before the start of the 2012-13 season. Troubles off the course also made negative headlines, as the Italian was banned for six months after failing a drug test in December 2012.
King of Comebacks

Grade One success has been a rarity for Dettori since making his move to the United States. But, he will be aiming to improve his tally of 15 winners at the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar in November.
